The Residence
A Safe Harbor in Affordable Assisted Living
Whaler’s Cove is located on the site of the former Herman L. Bishins Building bordering the Acushnet River in the North side of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Built in 1894 as a garment and textile mill, it was converted to a retail and office complex for Mars Bargainland in 1960. The use ended in 1990 and until 2001 the building remained vacant until the development of the assisted living community broke ground.
The project was issued $11 million in tax-exempt bonds and $2 million in taxable bonds by MassDevelopment a State agency committed to providing funds to develop affordable housing for the elderly. In addition, The State Department of Housing and Community Development as well as the City of New Bedford provided funds to help the renovation and conversion of this historic building as a continuing community resource for senior adults.
Whaler’s Cove has 120 studio, one bedroom and two bedroom apartments designed with state of the art Assistance-in-Living technology. Each apartment has individually controlled heating and air conditioning units, emergency response system, kitchenette, and bathroom. Amenities include a spacious dining room for all residents, large sunroom with interior gardens, chapel, library, beauty parlor/barber shop, resident computer room, arts and crafts room, and beautifully furnished lounge areas. In addition, a large auditorium will be available for residents of Whaler’s Cove as well as the community at large.
About 80% of the apartments will be affordable to low and moderate income residents. Whaler’s Cove is owned by Whaler’s Cove Limited Partnership, a Massachusetts partnership. Marketing and management services are provided by New Era Senior Living, LLC.
